Sue Sheridan is a patient safety leader who has turned two tragedies to triumph by using the severe harm to her son and death of her husband to save lives around the world. Her son, Cal, was born a healthy baby boy however, a bilirubin test was not done. After suffering brain damage from Kernicterous, and finding this to be a national problem, she rallied more than 90 mothers to develop and bring about a Joint Commission Sentinel Event saving untold babies the fate of her son. She went on to collaborate and lead programs with the World Health Organization along with patients and families around the world. She went on to become the Director of Patient Engagement with the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and a Patient & Family Engagement Advisor for the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid. She is now the Director of Patient Engagement with the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine. Sue Sheridan’s stories and support of caregivers is an inspiring legacy.
